Your College Student is Invited to College Student POA Day!

Is your child now 18 or older and off to college in the fall?  Financial and Medical Powers of Attorney are essential before they set off for their newfound independence.   

Why is this so important?  

Your 18 year old son or daughter is now a legal adult. This means that you no longer have the authority to make decisions on his or her behalf or obtain personal information about his financial and medical affairs. After 18 years of caring for your child and making all of their major decisions, it's hard to imagine having no voice for your child. 

Some potential issues include:

1. No authority to act in an emergency. 

2. No authority to help with financial needs due to lack of access to financial accounts, ability to assist with accounts, bursar's office matters, study-abroad funds, student loan matters, and more. 

3. No authority to ensure your child is safe and receiving appropriate care in the event of a physical or mental health matter due lack of access to medical records to review records, facilitate proper treatment, and communicate with medical personnel on your child's behalf. 

4. No authority to help facilitate drug or alcohol treatment for your child.

What documents are included in the Simple College POA Plan? 

Medical and Durable Power of Attorney

This document allows your child to name a trusted person (such as you) to advocate for him if he becomes ill, disabled or incapacitated, or just wants that trusted person to be able to communicate with and obtain information related to medical care. 

General and Durable Power of Attorney (Financial POA)

This document allows your child to name a trusted person to advocate, facilitate and handle financial matters as appropriate in the event that he requires advocacy/assistance, or if your child simply just wants you to take care of financial matters like dealing with the Bursar's Office.

This Plan does not include a Will or Living Will for your child. 

What's next?

We're offering a full-day dedicated exclusively to college students on Monday, August 10. 2026.  

1. Schedule appointment slot by clicking here and selecting a time slot on August 10th. Scheduling will close on July 31st.

2. College student to complete intake form (sent via e-mail) by August 3rd for attorney review. 

3. Attorney to prepare Medical POA and Financial POA for August 10th signing appointment.

4. College student to attend in-person appointment to sign documents on August 10th during scheduled time slot. (Approx. 20 minutes).
